Heel Pain Q & A

Premier Podiatry

Why do I have heel pain?

Of the 26 bones in each of your feet, your heel bone is the largest. Since it’s the primary shock-absorbing and weight-bearing bone in your foot, it’s certainly prone to injury and degenerative conditions. Your heel pain may be caused by:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Excessive pronation
  • Bone bruise

While most cases of heel pain aren’t anything serious, if left untreated, your condition — and thus your pain — can certainly get worse.

When should I see a doctor for heel pain?

Ideally, you’d visit with Dr. Petkov at Premier Podiatry as soon as your heel pain starts, just so he can find out what’s going on and treat the underlying issue. But if you’ve been suffering from heel pain for a while, it’s particularly important to schedule an evaluation right away if:

  • Your pain is getting worse
  • You notice swelling or inflammation
  • Your skin is red or warm to the touch

Plan on coming in to the clinic if your heel pain is keeping you from doing the things you enjoy, or is inhibiting your job functions. Dr. Petkov can gather essential diagnostic X-ray or ultrasound imaging on the spot, so you can usually get a thorough diagnosis and start treatment the same day as your appointment.

How is heel pain treated?

As with most foot and ankle conditions, your heel pain treatment depends on what’s causing it and your own individual needs. Dr. Petkov tailors your treatment plan to both relieve pain and inflammation as quickly as possible and to prevent further damage. Heel pain treatments can include:

  • Prescription custom orthotics
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • K-Laser
  • Physical therapy and stretches

As a less-common treatment and last resort, Dr. Petkov might suggest foot surgery to repair damaged tissues or bones, or to remove inflamed tissue. With his expertise in advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, you can expect a full recovery with a short downtime period after foot surgery.
